ABSTRACT

Objective The aim of this article was to investigate the effect of nasal endoscopic surgery (NES) using low-temperature plasma radiofrequency (LTPRF) in the treatment of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA). Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data on 38 cases of JNA treated by NES+LTPRF (n = 26) or conventional surgical resection (control, n = 12) in Drum Tower Hospital of Nanjing University School of Medicine from January 2012 to December 2018. We compared the operative time, postoperative Lund-Mackay endoscopy scores (LMES), incidence of complications, postoperative recovery, rate of recurrence, and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores between the two groups of patients. Results The rates of LMES gradesⅠ and Ⅱ were significantly higher while those of grades Ⅲ and Ⅳ remarkably lower in the NES+LTPRF than in the control group (P < 0.05). Compared with the controls, the patients of the NES+LTPRF group showed markedly shorter time of nasal mucosa epithelialization ([3.5 ± 0.1] vs [2.3 ± 0.1] mo, P < 0.05) and lower rates of postoperative complications (38.5% vs 7.7%, P < 0.05), recurrence (16.7% vs 3.8%, P < 0.05), and VAS scores at 3 days, 2 months, 6 months and 12 months after surgery (P < 0.05). Conclusion NES+LTPRF is an effective strategy for the treatment of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma and worthy of a wide clinical application.

ABSTRACT

Objective Early diagnosis of extra-nodal nasal type NK /T cell lymphoma (ENKTCL) is difficult and it is often misdiagnosed. This article was to analyze the CT and MRI findings of ENKTCL originating in the nasal cavity or sinus and investigate the values of CT and MRI in the diagnosis of the disease . Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data and CT and MRI findings about 13 cases of ENKTCL originating in the nasal cavity or sinus examined in our hospital from January 2012 to December 2017. Results Non-contrast CT scanning displayed soft tissue density shadow in the nasal cavity or sinus , with homogeneous density in the tumor and soft tissue mass with bony destruction ( mostly infiltrative absorption) in the midline nasal cavity and sinal area , and the area of soft tissue lesion was obviously larger than that of bony de -struction.Ten cases of contrast-enhanced CT of the tumor manifested mild to moderate heterogeneous density ; 10 cases of plain MRI pres-ented isointensity of T1WI and slightly increased intensity of T 2WI, while enhanced MRI showed mild to moderate heterogeneous density . Low-intensity T1WI, high-intensity T2WI and edge-enhancement were observed in the 10 cases accompanied by obstructive sinusitis . Conclusion ENKTCL originating in the nasal cavity or sinus has its own specific CT or /and MRI manifestations.Conventional CT or /and MRI combined with clinical signs and symptoms can accurately determine the site of lesion and scope of invasion and is therefore of important clinical significance for the early diagnosis and prognosis of the disease.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the advantages of nitric acid digestion method and its differences with the traditional method.@*METHODS@#Ethanol was used to fully fix the testing sample. About 80-100 g of the testing samples were cut into pieces and digested with nitric acid. It was then centrifuged and washed to remove organic components. Smears were prepared and examined under the light microscope.@*RESULTS@#The diatom had been identified with clear striations, counted conveniently and classified easily.@*CONCLUSION@#The improved nitric acid digestion method is not only simple with a higher successful rate of detection, but also can prevent interference from contamination. It can improve the stability of the experimental results, avoid harm to human and environment, and provide higher safety in the course of experiment.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the clinical value of multi-slice CT(MSCT)angiography in the diagnosis of Takayasu's arteritis. Methods Fourteen patients underwent MSCT angiography with use of 90 ml contrast media at a rate of 3.5 ml/s.Images were generated for vascular assessment with various reconstructional techniques, including multi-planar reformat(MPR),maximum intensity projection(MIP), volume rendering(VR),CT virtual endoscopy(CTVE)and advanced vessel analysis(AVA).Results MSCT angiography findings was consistent with the clinical changes of Takayasu's arteritis in all cases. The integrated information including reconstructional and transverse images clearly presented various luminal abnormalities, such as stenosis, occlusion and dilatation in the affected aorta,as well as its major branches and collateral circulation.Furthermore,it depicted mural abnormities, especially concentric arterial wall thickening.Steno-occlusive type(8/14)was more common than mixed type(6/14).According to Lupi- Herrea's classification, type Ⅰ in 5 cases, type Ⅱ in 2,type Ⅲ in 6 and type Ⅳ in 1 were recorded in the present study. Conclusion MSCT angiography is reliable imaging modality for the detection of Takayasu's arteritis. It is useful for early diagnosis because it allows evaluation of wall thickness rather than merely the luminal diameter, which is especially important for prognosis. It might be used as the first choice in the diagnosis of this disease as a simple, convenient and noninvasive method.
